This Week's VC Update

Another Monday 3 more games to be added to the Wii Virtual Console. This week they will be:

Star Soldier (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): The standard for vertically scrolling shooters, Star Soldier is the original game that spawned all of the titles in the long-running Soldier series. Go inside a floating space station inhabited by a giant computer known as Starbrain. Your mission: to stop Starbrain's galactic invasion by piloting Caesar, a new, compact space fighter through 16 deadly stages. Collect power capsules to increase three different attributes of your ship: firepower, movement speed and defensive shields. Blast wave after wave of approaching enemies or use the innovative Trap Zone feature to fly beneath a land mass and avoid incoming fire. Conquer each stage to make your way to the final confrontation with Starbrain.

Dynamite Headdy (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): Headdy, a toy with a detachable head, arrives in North Town to find that the evil puppet king Dark Demon is causing serious problems. Dark Demon is gathering up all the puppets in town and turning some into his own evil minions, while eliminating the rest of the puppets that aren't good enough to join his legions. Headdy is captured and is targeted for the incinerator, but escapes in the nick of time. Now he's got to save the town. To do so, Headdy has to take on all manner of bad guys and even has to contend with his lifelong nemesis, Trouble Bruin the bear. Can Headdy overcome all his foes and take down Dark Demon?

Drop Off (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Brave five rounds of haunting, nightmarish dreams in this take on the classic arcade puzzler. To save his dearly beloved from the malicious demon that controls her dreams and holds her captive, our brave hero plunges himself into the nightmare to vanquish this evil foe. Deftly use the arrow items and control the angle of the ball to shatter the blocks that descend from the top of the screen. Set your sights on the joints holding the blocks together and knock off multiple blocks in one exhilarating blow. As you drop more and more blocks, their shapes will change, allowing you to earn bonus points. You must use your concentration and reflexes to defeat the demon and save your beloved.

Lots of HD-DVD Goodies From Microsoft Starting Aug. 1st

Today Microsoft announced lots of good things for the HD-DVD format that will begin to go into effect starting August 1st. First, the add-on HD-DVD drive for the 360, previously $199.99, is now $179.99. Second, the 360 is now part of the 5 HD-DVD movie deal which in the past was only offered from Toshiba. Now this isn't any 5 HD-DVDs you want though, they are from a list of 15 available movies. To see the list and how to get your 5 FREE HD-DVD movies go here (pdf file). Third, the movie 300 will be available on demand in High Definition starting August 14th. Finally, ALL Xbox Live members will be able to download in ADVANCE for FREE the pilot episode of Heroes Season 1 in High Definition.

Sounds like a good deal to me, but is this a desperate attempt to attract more customers to the HD-DVD Format? Or is Microsoft finally ready to win this High Definition war? I'll guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

Gran Turismo 5 Details Emerge

Polyphony Digital's main man Kazunori Yamauchi dished plenty of details about GranTurismo 5 Prologue recently, telling Famitsu about the networking features the driving sim is expected to ship with this fall. For the early look at the real Gran Turismo 5, Yamauchi is planning for 40 cars, 4 tracks, 12-player online races, friends list support and an online mode with chat.

1UP's report of the Famitsu interview also gives us a hazy vision of what that mysterious PlayStation Home integration would be like, indicating that a "Gran Turismo World" game space will be included, giving players the ability to switch from Home to GT5 Prologue and vice-versa.

PSP Firmware Update 3.52

Sony has released yet another firmware update for the PSP. This time it is called version 3.52. What does it do? Pretty much nothing like the previous update. All that is known about this update is "Supports for PlayStation Network titles has been expanded". Wow, I wonder what that means. Oh, wait you can PAY for old PS One games on your PS3 (since there is no PS3 games to play) and play them on your PSP, what a breakthrough! Come on Sony, why don't you just release a REAL update already and quit fooling around.

This Week's VC Update

Here are 3 more games to add to the ever growing list of Virtual Console games:

Kirby's Dream Course™ (Super NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): Step up to the tee for the wackiest golf game of your life. This one- or two-player game features a floating golf course in the sky. High above Dream Land, players can pitch and putt the ever-popular puff ball, Kirby, through a maze of three-dimensional obstacles on a zany checkerboard course. Players must aim for the multitude of enemies that are spread throughout each fairway. Kirby must hit all the enemies to make them disappear, and the last one becomes the hole. Sink Kirby into the hole to advance to the next stage and clear all 8 courses - 64 holes in all.

Devil's Crush (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Animated Blood, Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): Devil's Crush is the exciting sequel to the hit pinball game Alien Crush and features even smoother ball movement and enhanced special effects. Shoot the ball onto the board with the Devil Shooter, then use flippers and nudging to keep it in play and rack up a high score. Complete certain conditions to play up to six different bonus stages. Get a "Perfect Clear" on those to earn a huge amount of points. The game's ominous theme is enhanced by its enemies: wandering skeleton knights, sorcerers and even a giant face that changes from a goddess to a sinister serpent.

Shining Force™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): In ages long forgotten, Light fought Darkness for control of the world. Finally, the Ancients defeated the evil ruler of the dark forces known as Dark Dragon and cast him into another dimension, though he vowed to return in 1,000 years. As time passed, all memory of Dark Dragon was buried, and the land of Rune enjoyed 10 centuries of peace. Yet, as promised, the dark ruler returned, along with hordes of evil creatures that ravaged the land. As chaos erupted, several strongholds of Good still held out, awaiting a hero who could wield the Powers of Light.

New 360 LIVE Stats

At E3 last week we got to sit down and chat with enthusiastic Xbox Live boss JJ Richards, and he was more than eager to throw his massive Xbox Live stats in our direction.

Usually these kinds of numbers are more sleep-inducing than a Horlicks and Rohypnol cocktail, but the massive numbers Microsoft has a achieved are bloody impressive.

As Richards points out, the 7 million-strong Xbox Live community is now the "biggest social network around a television".

Collectively, Xbox gamers have racked up over 2 billion hours online (that's 332,000 years), with over 2 billion game sessions initiated. 230 million of those hours were spent playing sports titles, which will please old Mr. Moore in his new EA Sports swivel chair.

Making our Gamerscore feel rather puny, Richards says the community has managed to collect over 11 billion Gamerpoints and unlock 466 million achievements. We can only wonder what kind of fans Microsoft has pointing at the Live servers. And if your head doesn't hurt yet, gamers have also managed 45 million Xbox Live Arcade downloads and a million sent messages every day. Sony has got some catching up to do, then. When it finally came to Q&A time we expectedly jumped on the opportunity to query the next Xbox Live dashboard update, which Richards told us precisely bugger all about. "We release an update every six months, right?" he said. "We're not telling you anything about what we're releasing in October/November with that next release. So between now and holiday there's actually going to be more than what we're telling you about."

Bully Coming to 360 and Wii

It seems like one port after another. Just the other day Rockstar announced Table Tennis coming to the Wii, and now we have Bully: Scholarship Edition coming to the Wii and 360 this Fall. The game, previously released for the PS2, will feature "new content", but no details of what as of yet.

FarCry 2 Announced

Ubisoft has officially announced a sequel to 2004's tropical and somewhat topical first-person shooter, Far Cry. Praised for its luscious visuals, large environments and merciless pig slaughter, the PC game eventually made its way to consoles in confusingly titled spin-offs such as Far Cry Instincts Predator and Far Cry Instincts Evolution. We think there may be some colons in there too.

Simply entitled Far Cry 2, the new addition to the franchise is being developed for PC by Ubisoft's Montreal studio (original developer Crytek is currently pouring tears into Crysis) and is scheduled for a Spring 2008 release on PC. Aside from the above logo, apparently dragged behind Ubisoft's car before it was uploaded, no further images relating to the sequel have surfaced. Expect loads of jungles, obnoxious henchman and distant weeping.

More RE 5 Details Emerge

Takeuchi only provided vague hints about the storyline. As many have guessed from the insignia that appears in the footage, main character Chris Redfield is a member of a group called BSAA. According to Takeuchi, something has happened in the desert area that serves as the game's setting, and BSAA has dispatched Chris to investigate.

Once on the scene, Chris encounters a new form of enemy. Takeuchi described the game's enemies as something of human form that has intelligence. However, the foes are neither zombie nor ganado (in reference to the creatures from RE4).

In addition to the new enemy, a certain girl will make an appearance in the game. She's someone whom fans of the series will recognize. In the full version of the E3 trailer (which will be distributed on Xbox Live and PSN later this month), she appears just briefly, but Takeuchi expects her to have a more significant role in the next trailer (no ETA given on that, unfortunately). In the game proper, she will have a big part both in the story and as part of the gameplay.

On the topic of gameplay systems, Takeuchi admitted to the magazine that the hardest part of development so far has been in mixing new elements with part 4's basic gameplay. For the most part, RE5 will be played from a perspective similar to that of part 4, with Chris appearing on the left side of the screen. However, Takeuchi also promised a big surprise addition that he believes is an obvious evolution for the gameplay.

According to Takeuchi, if, after seeing the E3 trailer, you feel RE5 looks like RE4 now, you'll be left with a completely different impression following the next trailer.

Previously, Takeuchi has spoken about the importance of light in the game. In this latest interview, he offered an example of how light will play a role. Say Chris enters a doorless building. The surroundings are bright and the interior is dark, so it takes Chris a few moments to adapt before he can see. The game will replicate this, along with the opposite effect of going into a bright area after being in the dark for an extended period. This is where you can expect to encounter some of the series' trademark fear, this time from the inability to aim or see.

Takeuchi wouldn't provide a solid release date for RE5, but there seemed to be some consensus of it appearing some time before 2010. It will be a long wait, but then again so was the wait for RE4, and that one turned out pretty good.

Microsoft's Peter Moore is No More

Yes, you read right, today is a sad day at Microsoft. Peter Moore, the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, is leaving Microsoft to go and take over to be the President of EA Sports. Here's the official press release from EA:

PETER MOORE NAMED PRESIDENT OF EA SPORTS LABEL

Industry Veteran To Lead EA SPORTS -- The Strongest Brand in Interactive Entertainment

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - July 17, 2007 - Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Peter Moore has joined EA as President of the EA SPORTS™ Label. Moore joins EA from Microsoft Corporation where he served as corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division, leading both the Xbox® and Games for Windows businesses. Moore begins at EA in September and will report to EA CEO John Riccitiello.

Mr. Moore's appointment rounds out the leadership of John Riccitiello's recent reorganization of EA into four autonomous Labels. Frank Gibeau serves as president of the EA Games Label; Kathy Vrabeck is president of EA Casual Entertainment; and Nancy Smith is president of The Sims™ Label.

"Peter Moore's proven record of leadership in games and sports makes him a terrific fit for heading up EA SPORTS," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "As a partner at Microsoft and earlier, as a competitor, we've learned to respect his vision and leadership."

"The people at EA SPORTS have created one of the strongest brands in the entertainment industry and John Riccitiello is building an organization which will extend the company's leadership to new platforms and new audiences all over the world," said Peter Moore. "I couldn't be more excited about joining EA and moving my family back to the San Francisco Bay Area."

The EA SPORTS Label is the strongest brand in the games business with blockbuster franchises such as Madden NFL, NBA LIVE, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR®, FIFA Soccer, NASCAR®, and others. With Peter Moore's leadership and the passion, creativity and dedication of its development teams, EA SPORTS is expected to become even stronger in the years to come. EA plans to expand the EA SPORTS experience with new content, new platforms, new services and deep online integration.

At Microsoft, Mr. Moore was the president of the Xbox and Games for Windows businesses as well as game development at Microsoft Game Studios. Mr. Moore joined Microsoft in January 2003, originally as the head of marketing for the Xbox and Games division, bringing with him more than 20 years of experience and leadership in consumer businesses. Prior to joining Microsoft, Mr. Moore was president and COO of SEGA of America, where he was responsible for overseeing SEGA's video game business in North America. Before that, Mr. Moore was senior vice president of marketing at Reebok International Ltd., and earlier in his career, he was president of Patrick USA, the U.S. subsidiary of the popular French sportswear company, managing all the company's marketing, sales, finance and distribution.

You can't blame Moore though, there was just too many good things at EA that he just couldn't turn down. First, he gets to move back to the Bay Area, a place he has been wanting to move to for a while with his family. He is getting a yearly paid salary of $550,000 not including a bonus of up to $412,500. Plus he gets a $1.5 Million signing bonus if he agrees to stay with the company for at least 2 years. He also will get at least $4.26 Million worth of stock in EA, but wait that is not it, he will also get an added $330,000 for moving expenses. Like I said earlier, you can't blame him, money talks.

This Week's VC Update

Ah, another Monday 3 more games to play on the Wii's Virtual Console. Here they are:

Paper Mario® (Nintendo® 64, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone--Comic Mischief, 1,000 Wii Points): Paper Mario is a graphically innovative game that breaks from the confines of the RPG genre. Now slimmed down, everyone's favorite plumber flips, spins, jumps and hammers his way through scads of exotic worlds that teem with a huge and hugely entertaining supporting cast. Players control numerous old and new characters in a complex, nonlinear story that follows different scenarios depending on player choices. A dizzying collection of spells, attacks, skills and special items can be collected by players willing to thoroughly explore the lush 3-D environments.

Balloon Fight® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Control a character to pop your opponents' balloons before they pop yours. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Don't be fooled by this game's simple premise or cute exterior. Underneath you'll find a surprisingly addictive game with strategy to spare. After mastering the easy-to-learn controls, you still have to get a grip on the game's impressively realistic physics. And if that's not enough, there are the ever-increasing enemies and environmental hazards like lightning and water. Try the game's second mode, Balloon Trip, if you feel like taking a break from the action and just want to see how long you can stay aloft. And hey, who doesn't like popping balloons sometimes?

Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone--Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): Make your way through a dungeon-like space station and defeat the prowling monsters in this real-time first-person shooter. You're a member of the elite Debuggers, a group of warriors who are jacks-of-all-trades. Assigned to inspect an unmanned space station, you have exactly 100 minutes to get in, destroy the monsters lurking in each block, make your way to the lowest level and deactivate the automatic detonator placed there. With each monster that slips by you, the core block becomes harder to survive in, so speed is key in preserving the facility and each separate block. Experience the thrill of survival as the timer ticks away and you uncover the truth of the events that occurred.
